Set within the coastal landscape of Portsea on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, this project transforms a steeply sloping sand dune site into a series of connected outdoor rooms that balance recreation, ecology and retreat. The design carefully negotiates significant level changes, using retaining walls and terraced landforms to embed a full-sized tennis court into the terrain while maintaining a cohesive garden setting .
A strong ecological framework underpins the scheme, with existing coastal vegetation retained and supplemented by indigenous species including Moonah, Coastal Banksia and Drooping She-oak. This layered planting approach reinforces local habitat character while providing privacy and wind protection typical of the Portsea environment .
Programmatically, the garden is structured to support both active and social uses. The sunken tennis court forms the central recreational element, outdoor entertaining area create a sheltered gathering space. Productive zones, including a vegetable garden and citrus planting, are positioned close to the house for ease of access.
Strategic boundary planting and integrated screening mitigate overlooking to the northern neighbour, ensuring privacy without compromising the open, coastal character of the site.
