Set between the ocean beaches and sheltered bay of the Mornington Peninsula, this residential landscape was designed to strengthen the connection between home, garden and place. Working alongside Pleysier Perkins Architects, MEMLA created a landscape that complements the contemporary architecture while responding to Sorrento’s distinctive coastal character. The design transforms the site into a sequence of outdoor spaces, including a generous arrival garden, pool terrace, mini orchard, expansive lawns and informal entertaining areas, each carefully connected by winding paths and framed views.
Drawing inspiration from the Peninsula’s indigenous vegetation, the planting palette combines Coastal Banksia, Native Peppermint, White Correa, Peninsula Daisy-bush and Coast Fescue with resilient grasses and low shrubs selected for their ability to thrive in sandy soils, coastal winds and extended dry periods. Existing mature trees were retained wherever possible, including the careful relocation of an established olive tree, helping preserve the site’s character while accommodating the new layout. Natural materials, including granitic screenings, Castlemaine slate crazy paving, timber retaining walls and hardwood fencing, provide a restrained material palette that sits comfortably within the surrounding landscape.
