This 1970’s townhouse renovation project distinguishes between a private courtyard retreat and a refreshed communal landscape at the front of the property. The design adopts a ‘Mid-Century Bush Garden’ approach, blending Indigenous and native planting with a restrained, architectural framework.
The private courtyard is conceived as an intimate outdoor room, centred around a feature Banksia and a layered mix of bird-attracting species. Borrowed views extend the spatial experience, drawing in the canopy of adjacent Jacaranda and larger plane trees beyond the site. This visual connection enhances openness while maintaining a sense of enclosure. Elements including a fire pit, BBQ area and herb garden support everyday living while reinforcing the courtyard’s calm, secluded character. A discreet pedestrian connection to the side street enhances accessibility without compromising security.
At the front of the property, the common landscape has been carefully refreshed to improve presentation, safety and legibility. Existing basalt rocks are repositioned to strengthen the entry identity, while a drought-tolerant planting palette of Banksia, Correa, Dianella, Poa and Chrysocephalum introduces texture and seasonal variation. This layered mix reduces maintenance, supports local birdlife and balances street visibility with resident privacy.
