Memla Landscape Architects has played a pivotal role in the long-term transformation of Emmanuel College’s St Paul’s Campus in Altona, evolving the grounds from a fragmented, asphalt-dominated site into a cohesive and enduring educational landscape. Beginning in 2001, the initial works redefined campus arrival by relocating parking and establishing a clear, legible entry sequence framed by structured planting and pedestrian movement.

Subsequent stages focused on creating functional, social and memorable outdoor environments. The Central Courtyard introduced a circular raised podium with integrated seating and shade, transforming a muddy, underperforming space into an all-weather gathering heart for students. Additional projects, including the Library Courtyard and McCoy Courtyard, extended this language through layered planting, defined circulation, and intimate learning settings.

A key later intervention, the Historic Walk, weaves narrative into the landscape, guiding students through a chronological journey marked by engraved stone dates, seating elements and a culminating amphitheatre space. Together with forecourts and car park works, these projects demonstrate a consistent design approach—balancing robustness, clarity and identity—resulting in a campus landscape that supports both daily use and long-term institutional storytelling.
