Mercy Place Mentone is a contemporary aged care residence designed to foster connection, wellbeing, and dignity through a carefully integrated landscape environment. Working in collaboration with Smith + Tracey, MEMLA developed a series of restorative outdoor spaces that respond to the building’s clustered “household” model, providing residents with direct access to nature from multiple points throughout the site.

The landscape is anchored by a central courtyard, featuring a sculptural water element, shaded pergola, and generous seating, creating a legible and inviting heart for the community. Surrounding this are a sequence of smaller courtyards and terraces, each offering varied experiences including quiet reflection gardens, raised planting areas, and spaces for social interaction. A children’s play area and village square further support intergenerational use and community engagement.

Planting design emphasises a diverse, predominantly native palette, selected for seasonal interest, sensory richness, and low maintenance outcomes. Meandering paths, bluestone paving, and textured surfaces guide movement while ensuring accessibility and safety for residents. Integrated water management initiatives, including rain gardens and on-site water reuse, reinforce the project’s sustainable approach.

Together, the landscape creates a therapeutic and familiar setting that enhances daily life, encouraging outdoor use, passive surveillance, and meaningful connection to place.
