The Sandringham Golf Links redevelopment reimagines the course as a resilient coastal landscape grounded in Bayside’s indigenous ecology. Central to the project is the restoration of native planting communities, including Heathy Woodland, Sand Heathland and Sedgy Swamp Woodland, reflecting the site’s pre-European vegetation patterns and sandy, nutrient-poor soils. A diverse palette of locally indigenous species—sourced from regional ecological benchmarks and contract grown through the Bayside Community Nursery - supports habitat creation, seedbank regeneration and long-term biodiversity outcomes.
Land management practices are integral to the design, embedding ongoing ecological processes into the landscape. Techniques such as selective weeding, slashing, pruning and controlled ecological burning are employed to stimulate regeneration, manage invasive species and enhance the resilience of heathland systems. These practices align with established methodologies used across Bayside reserves and nearby courses, reinforcing a landscape that evolves over time rather than remaining static.
The project also strengthens habitat corridors for local fauna, supporting birdlife, insects and small mammals through structurally diverse planting and water-sensitive design. Increased indigenous vegetation and new water bodies contribute to improved ecological function while reducing reliance on potable water for irrigation.
Together, planting and land management establish Sandringham Golf Links as a model for integrating recreation with the conservation of Bayside’s unique coastal flora and fauna.
