Set along Victoria’s dramatic southwest coast, the Skene’s Creek project is conceived as a coastal development deeply connected to its surrounding landscape. Inspired by the tectonic formations of the Otways, the power of Bass Strait, prevailing southwesterly winds and high rainfall, the design responds directly to the environmental forces that have shaped this unique coastline over time.
The masterplan is guided by principles of minimal environmental impact and sensitive site integration. Existing indigenous woodland is carefully retained, with buildings arranged in discreet clusters nestled within the landscape to preserve ecological character and maximise views toward Bass Strait, Skenes Creek headland and Apollo Bay. Roadways and parking areas are deliberately minimised and surfaced in gravel to reduce visual and environmental disturbance, while infrastructure is concealed underground to maintain the natural setting.
A significant focus of the project is ecological restoration. Indigenous planting strategies reintroduce native coastal grasses, shrubs and woodland species in a successional pattern that reflects the surrounding ecology. Natural drainage lines are incorporated into the stormwater system, allowing water to move visibly through the site and reinforcing residents’ connection to the rhythms of the Otway environment.
Influenced by the ethos of the pioneering Sea Ranch development, the project establishes a benchmark for low-impact coastal living where architecture and landscape exist as one.
